Art Classes are Important!
You have no idea, how many times I have heard people saying, that fine art is rubbish, you can’t make money by painting and people considering pictorial art something of the finger painting kind.
To prove those people wrong, I have come up with a few points on why art theory and history along with fine art skills makes one’s work more professional.
Don’t Underestimate Fine Art
If you’re a graphic designer with experience, you probably have already come across the need of being able to draw. Art classes both theory and practice are other underrated by students (personal experience) as opposed to design principles and software based skills.
One thing that is important to remember is that fine art, renaissance theory, classical art history – this all is the fundamental knowledge for everyone that has anything to do with visual elements. Just like the alphabet, the art history and still life sketching help one understand design and illustrations better and deeper.
Apart from that, learning how to draw and getting into theory helps you out on a professional level.
It gives you edge
It’s a very simple point, but it drives me crazy how much people don’t see this. You can’t be a good architect without knowing the geometry. You can’t be a good sportsman without being 100% sure of what your body’s capable of.
Same with a designer. Sure, you can keep making template pages or logos that look trendy, but if there’s no thought, no intellect behind them, someday there will be a man who will be able to surpass your work. A good, thought-out work cannot be surpassed.
It saves time
Whether it is perfecting the color theory, sketching and scanning graphics or using basic principles of visual art,
It creates extra income
It does! And I’m not talking about Christmas window decorations (however, I’m not stopping you from trying it). I’m talking about theory based professions, like lecturing in college or writing for a blog or a magazine. It’s not possible to teach people how to create good business cards, it’s only possible to guide them and give them theory based on your or someone else’s knowledge.
It inspires
Whenever I go to an art gallery, I always bring a notebook with me to write down the names of the pieces I liked. They inspire me, despite of the genre, artist or anything else. Learning the Renaissance history gives you an opportunity to see the greatest art minds of the time at work, get into the art mood.
Every professional should be proud of what he does and learning the basics and the fundamentals is a part of the profession. I hope I changed your mind and you’re already sketching some still life or something ;)
See you next time!
